With President-elect Donald Trump taking office in January, many are uncertain about whether the Affordable Care Act will remain in place or be repealed. Donald Trump has promised to repeal the law that created the Affordable Care Act exchange, and the cabinet he has chosen so far seems to be in favor of repealing as well. So how long will your health insurance plan last? At this point, it’s hard to tell what Trump will be able to do.
Just because Donald Trump has made this promise, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t sign up for health insurance for the 2017 year. The plans are still available, and those who want health insurance should enroll before the January 31st deadline. If you want your coverage to start on January 1st, you need to sign up by December 15th. (Although in the state of Washington, you do have an extra week! Sign up by December 23rd!)
If Congress and Trump decide to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, it may not happen immediately. Right now the most likely avenue for the Affordable Care Act repeal efforts is the defunding of the program. But in order for congress to do that, they have to make sure that the individual market doesn’t spiral down, making it a difficult task to achieve.
Generally, all of the health insurance plans are written for a year. If the defunding process works, it’s possible that those plans may not last through 2017. But repealing the Affordable Care Act and replacing it will be a very tedious task so it is expected to take some time. If anything changes, it is likely that those changes won’t take effect until 2018 at the earliest.
For now, the Affordable Care Act is still in place and the health insurance plans are available for Americans to purchase. It is better to be safe and get a health insurance plan because the future is unknown at this time.
